BBC sends first wrestler to NCAA III Nationals

Ben Stum will be BBC's first NCAA post-season participant when he travels to the NCAA III National Tournament in Dubuque, IA this week-end. Stum, a senior from Mechanicsburg, PA, will compete in the 197# weight class after qualifying at the Midwest Regional Conference Championships, hosted by Manchester College, IN. Seeded #1, Stum was upset in the first round by Nic Engler (Thiel College). Up 11-4 in the second period, an unexpected turn of events found Stum on his back resulting in a quick fall. Determined to fight back and finish strong, Stum pinned his next two opponents in 1:14 combined. In the consolation final for 3rd place, Stum defeated #5 seed Will Clarke (Wabash College) with a major decision, 13-5.

Stum was awarded one of four wild cards because of his strong showing and 25-4 season record. Previously this season, Stum had beaten the eventual 197# winner, Josh Schmidt (Case Western Reserve University), at the Messiah College Invitational, 7-4. The first round upset was his first time to be pinned this year.

One of only three 100-career win wrestlers in BBC's history, Stum has steadily improved over his collegiate career. He qualified to compete at the NCWA National Tournament his sophomore and junior year, placing 5th & 4th respectively. The NCWA is a national organization of club teams from NCAA I, II, and III schools.
