Second Half Sparks Cyclones Over Defenders

Clarks Summit, PA- In a CSAC shootout Centenary College used an 81 percent second half shooting performance to knock off Baptist Bible 102-89. It was a game of threes and free throws. Baptist Bible was 13 of 25 from downtown while Centenary hit 11 of 26. From the charity strip the Cyclones won out as they went 25 of 37 while the Defenders were 14 of 15.

The first half saw a combined 11 three point shots made as the Defenders went 6 for 11 and Centenary shot 5 of 18. Despite shooting only 37 percent to Baptist Bible's 50 percent, Centenary forced 17 first period turnovers to keep the game close. Each team had a share of the lead throughout the first period, but it would be the Cyclones who took the 35-34 lead into the break.

The Cyclones ended the first half on a 7-0 spurt, and they carried that momentum to start the second half on a 13-2 run. Centenary would then use 3 three pointers on 3 straight possessions to push the lead to 14 and eventually 20. The Defenders found hard to get back in the game. With 2 minutes left, Baptist Bible was down only 9 (93-84) after a Tommy Waszaj three, but the 81 percent shooting from the field in the second half by the Cyclones was too much as they grabbed the 102-89 victory.

Tommy Waszaj (East Brunswick, NJ) led all scorers with 23 points. Nathan Greve (Arcanum, OH) and Seth Bernard (Hilliard, OH) scored 18 and 11 points respectively while grabbing 6 and 7 rebounds. Off the bench, Jordan Bush (Schroon Lake, NY) added 14 points and Travis Wash (Newport News, VA) chipped in 10. Stephen Howard (Elizabethtown, PA) had a game high 6 assists for the Defenders.

Rob Urie led five double figure scorers from Centenary with 20 points. Ryan and Corey Kearney contributed 17 and 14 points. Ryan also had 7 rebounds on the night. Ryan Donavon scored 12 points, and Larry Lenahan added 10 points and 6 boards.

Up next, the Defenders (2-17, 0-13) will be on the road as they take on CSAC opponent Philadelphia Biblical University on Tuesday at 8:00 pm.
