Canberra outranked Sydney and Melbourne to become the best place in Australia for tourists in 2018, according to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel Top 10 Cities 2018 list.
The list also ranked the Australian capital as the third best city in the world for travellers. Canberra also became the only Australian city to land on the list’s top 10.
Lonely Planet spokesperson Chris Zeiher said that Canberra’s ranking reflected how it “packs a big punch for such a small city.” Certain milestones for the city also helped in branding it as one of the best places for tourists next year. The Manuka Oval, for instance, will serve as the venue for an International Test cricket match that will lure sports fans to the city, according to Zeiher.
In late 2018, Canberra will also host the centennial anniversary of the WWI Armistice at the Australian War Memorial. These planned events only show that there is a particular attraction for each tourist’s preferences. For those that plan a tour throughout Australia’s capital cities, there are some convenient transportation choices. If you plan to visit Canberra before Sydney, coach-for-hire services like Concord Coaches allow you to visit different places without worrying about how to reach your destination.
Other Top Cities
The city of Seville in Spain ranked on top of Lonely Planet’s list, followed by Detroit in the U.S. Germany’s Hamburg ranked behind Canberra, while Kaohsiung City in Taiwan landed on the fifth spot as the only city in Asia on the list.
The other cities in the top 10 comprised Antwerp, Belgium; Matera, Italy; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Guanajuato, Mexico; and Oslo, Norway.
The list proves that there are more attractive places to visit in Australia aside from Sydney and Melbourne. If you have not planned a trip yet to Canberra, where do you wish to spend a vacation in the city?
